Modern Times, Filled with Modern Issues

Can marriage still be a legacy-building institution?

-

The vows of till death do we part no longer apply. They have been replaced with until boredom will I leave. The ceremony of two lives intertwining as one is contingent on status and financial access. A man’s character is no longer as crucial as his dollar signs. Furthermore, a woman’s compatibility and respectable traits do not entice as much as her sexuality and recklessness. The Black American family legacy is dying.

Holding hands

The old idea of finding a partner to spend the rest of your life with, once enthralled generations from the moment they graduated high school. The concept has grown like mold over the minds of young people across the black community. New perceptions for gender roles, and relationship dynamics have disrupted the cornerstone of the black community. Under intense pressure to find a place to fit in, most young people are distracted by the undeniable feeling of belonging.

The cold hard facts are only a deterrent to the elevation of either side. The relationship between men and women has slowly evolved into a battle of who can get away with more. There have been, and will always be selfish and self-absorbed individuals. Society has turned to angst and anxiety to feed their need to be correct.

Boasting about one’s sexual escapades or the number of men hopping into a DM is what now intrigues young modern women. The ability to publicly flaunt and tease men shouldn’t warrant any correction. Marriage has become a barrier to a life of freedom.

Chasing the desires of the flesh, or the amount of money one can accrue is all young modern men consume themselves with. The belief that money and status will erase any inadequacies or increase their confidence is a complete fallacy. Neither money nor status can hide the true character of a man.

Wandering eye

Instant message has thrown the lives of humans off course. The amount of access to the opposite sex has only increased the temptation faced daily by both men and women. The idea of a life-long partnership is but a feather in the wind. The grass will continuously look greener through filters and the carefully displayed life of leisure.

Marriage is a divine concept, and man’s intervention has only soiled it. Placing a soul before your own is a sign of divinity. The husband bore the task of carrying the family’s hardships so that the next generation could prosper. The wife bears the burden of the family’s spirit and keeps it from the destruction of the flesh. The bond was never about happiness solely but the procreation and protection of the genes.

As a community, we have lost sight of the meaning of togetherness. Living your best life, or “doing you” takes priority over the future of your offspring.

We can not pour ourselves solely into the lives of our offspring, but we must consider our reflection in them. Looking across the landscape of black marriage, the future gets bleaker by the day. However, some families hold on to the idea of preserving the seed. The vastness of the opposition to the family grows.

Stay close

As young men and women pre-marriage age see the inability of their elders to unify, the more they divide themselves. There is always room for improvement. We have gone so far away from anything recognizable, that it seems like we are making new rules every day. The solid and unmovable truth is that a family is the foundation for our existence and ability to thrive.

One side blaming the other will only end in an endless circle of got ya!

One side will always lurk in the dark shadows, waiting for the moment to spring from a bush with the banner of victory.

One can only hope that the black community stops trying to redefine the idea that is proven to help communities thrive.

Will there be difficult and overwhelming times? Of this, I’m sure.

I do!

It is my opinion, that some traditions have lasted centuries because they work. How many times has the wheel been reinvented?

Some traditions change because they only serve the time in which were created. How long can an ideal that feeds off destruction last before the light awakens the people who follow blindly?

I am going to continue to promote truth and family as I know that it can save many lives, but also enhance the gifted amongst us. The nurturing home a wife provides, and the strong foundation a father demands, can only build a home for the future to thrive in.

Learn self, and hold others accountable.

Learn others, and hold yourself accountable.

The more we seek the light, the brighter the future can be.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in an era(the 1980s) where families and communities suffered many tragedies and traumas, I was no exception. The path many children took involved dangerous outcomes and possible life-threatening decisions. At a young age, I could adapt which allowed me to avoid pitfalls early. However, as we grow, life can be a bit daunting and overwhelm anyone. Facing many challenges, I attended the public school system where I was introduced to my first piece of creativity. “Goodnight Moon,” a book that allowed young people to feel the warmth of saying goodnight. Upon reaching high school I began to explore the many different forms of creativity from music, art, and creative writing. This would consume me over the next two decades. From making beats to writing stories, I felt a strong desire to craft material which inspired young people. As a father and husband, though struggles persist, the lessons learned have allowed me to share through my creative literary works continually. Life isn't a destination along a path, life is the path
